Following The Rebbe’s Request: Yossi Green With A Moving Melody From Shir HaShirim “Pischi Li”

THE STORY

It is said that “There are over 70 different ways to explain every single passage and concept in the Heiligeh (Holy) Torah.”  In the lyric to this new composition, we see a powerful example of the great depths and multi-level meanings behind what appears at first to be one of the self-evident Psukim in Shir Hashirim. But upon further examination, one immediately becomes aware of entire universes laden with mystery behind these Heiligeh words.

In general, I grew up with the understanding that words of Shir Hashirim are not to be set to song. Though every once in a while a song would in fact emerge that was set to its text, I had made sense of that by attributing this to text that had been inserted into our prayers.

It was when I received a request by the Munkatcher Ruv שליט”א for a composition to these words, I leaped at the opportunity to get this done for him, as I always do when receiving a request from the Ruv שליט”א. And so I began to learn the words again and again, looking at many of the available commentaries, attempting to comprehend a bit of what their meaning could be. This composition is a result of my own meager understanding. The simple translation (mine) seems to be:

I am asleep though my heart is awake…
The sound of my precious is knocking at my door…
“Open the door for me…
אחותי… רעיתי… יונתי… תמתי…
Four treasured and mysterious terms of endearment for כנסת ישראל… For the sake of the song, the only one I dare attempt to translate is “תמתי as in תמימתי  -My perfect one…”  Indeed, כלל ישראל is as close to ‘perfection’ as can be…
