TYH Nation Presents: No Shtus – Avraham Fried
Just say no to Shtus!
There is a mind-boggling question that pierces to the very essence of our lives. How could a holy Yid, who possesses within him a Chelek Elokah Mima’al, a soul rooted in the highest of worlds, ever fall into sin? How could something so holy ever do something that is so beneath its stature?
Chazal reveal that a person only falls into sin when a spirit of folly, a sense of “silliness,” takes hold of them. Each person has their own version of Shtus in their lives, and this song reminds us that we can overcome it all by remaining connected to that chelek elokah within us by connecting ourselves to the Torah and mitzvos that Hashem gave us.
Our Tzaddikim expound on this idea to show the immense power every Yid possesses to choose their path. While the struggle between good and evil feels intense, the choice in every moment is actually quite simple. Deep down, our hearts already yearn for Elokus (G-dliness); we just need to push aside the Shtus that clouds our vision.
The Mezritcher Maggid shares a transformative insight on the mishna, “Da ma Lemala Mimcha,” which means “Know what is above you.” He reveals a hidden meaning in these words: Know that everything happening in the higher realms is actually Mimcha, meaning it is “from you.” This highlights the incredible impact a single action has on the entire universe, vibrating throughout both the spiritual and physical worlds.
We should take a moment every day to pause and remind ourselves why we are here and what our true purpose is.
Rebbe Nosson composed a masterpiece of prayers called Likutei Tefillos, filled with the most authentic and beautifully worded communications with Hashem. In the very first prayer of this collection, he provides the perfect words matching the theme of this song:
