Voices of Redemption: Lev Tahor & Mordechai Shapiro’s ‘Geula’ Is A Tefillah Anthem For The Heart of Klal Yisrael
Mordechai Shapiro has always been a fan of the legendary Jewish music group Lev Tahor. Growing up, he would sing along to their classics like “Uvenei” and “Rifa’einu,” songs that became anthems in Jewish households worldwide. So, when Lev Tahor‘s composer Gadi Fuchs approached Shapiro with a new song titled “Geula“—meaning redemption—Shapiro was immediately intrigued.
Fuchs had been working on “Geula” since the harrowing attacks in Israel on October 7, a day that profoundly affected the nation. The song was more than just a melody; it was a plea for hope, a musical embodiment of the struggle and yearning for peace. When Shapiro heard it, he knew he had to be part of it. “Let’s collaborate,” he told Fuchs, and a powerful partnership was born.
Eli Schwebel, Lev Tahor‘s producer and vocalist, had just returned from 4 months on the front lines performing for the troops in Israel. Having witnessed the conflict firsthand, Schwebel was determined to channel the emotions he experienced into the music. Alongside fellow Lev Tahor members Ari Cukier and Gadi Fuchs, and now with Shapiro‘s involvement, the group set out to create a track that would resonate deeply with listeners, particularly those feeling the weight of the ongoing conflict in Israel.
The song “Geula” is a musical journey that honors the “Reay Na” Bracha in the Amidah. This prayer asks for divine intervention and redemption in the face of a seemingly unbeatable enemy. The group spent five months writing, rewriting, and layering harmonies and strings to ensure the song captured the depth of Israel’s pain and the hope for redemption.
The result is a piece that doesn’t just tell a story—it embodies the struggle, the sorrow, and the undying hope of a nation under siege. “Geula” is more than a song; it’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of music to convey the most profound emotions.
