Esa Einai – Solo Piano Album by Mendy Portnoy feat. Daniel Zamir

For Mendy Portnoy growing up, the music of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach was always a big part of his life. Whether in Shul, at the Friday night table, or at an inspiring havdallah ceremony, his music was always a prominent feature.

There is something so beautiful about his music’s combination of humble simplicity and incredible depth that makes it relevant to people of all backgrounds, faiths and ages.

The idea of this project, “Esa Einai” was to take the melodies of Reb Shlomo to a place of my own and share my interpretations with the world.

Mendy would like to dedicate this album to his wife, Muki.

He hope’s you enjoy it.

I first met Mendy at his auditions for “Mizmor” Academy for Jewish Music. Mendy came to audition for our first class ever.

He didn’t know much back then but we were all amazed by his musicality. When we asked him if he knew what he was doing, like which note he was playing or what kind of a chord he was playing, he had no idea!

After three fruitful years in Mizmor he developed more than I have developed in the last decade and reached the beautiful sound and style you can hear here.

His Carlebach project is a monumental piece of music and it was my privilege to take part in it.

With gratitude to all,

DANIEL ZAMIR
