25 Years After Composing: Avi Ilson & Shmuel Gelber Release “Shema Koleinu” In The Month of Elul
Some melodies are simply waiting for the right moment. 25 years after Shmuel Gelber composed “Shema Koleinu,” the song is now being released precisely during the month of Elul, a time of prayer, introspection, and coming closer.
“Shema Koleinu” was born about a quarter of a century ago, during a significant period in Gelber‘s life, and carries with it the unique flavor of Chassidic music of the past – a moving melody, simplicity, and depth, without the need for flashy production.
In honor of the re-release, singer Avi Ilson, Shmuel Gelber‘s son-in-law, joins the performance, lending the song his voice and the emotion associated with it. The arrangement and musical production were created by Shmuel Gelber and Nehorai Gelber.
The lyrics are taken from the sources, and at the center is the prayer “Shema Koleinu” – a request that Hashem hear our prayers and the desires of our hearts. The choice to release the song specifically in Elul gives it special meaning and makes the melody that was born 25 years ago ever more relevant.
