Five songs, one musical journey: from the forgiveness and supplication of the High Holy Days, through prayer and hope, to the bursting joy of the Sukkot festival.
During this month of holidays, singer Laybi Daitsch is launching a new EP featuring five songs born of a deep personal connection to the prayers, lyrics, and special moments of the month of Tishrei. The album takes the listener on an emotional and spiritual journey—beginning with the awe of Divine Judgment , continuing with the plea for forgiveness and mercy, and concluding with the joy of the festival and a yearning for redemption.
To create the album, Daitsch teamed up with composer Avreimi Schiff, seeking melodies that would not merely accompany the lyrics but give them precise expression. Alongside this collaboration, Daitsch sought to bring young talent and a fresh musical spirit to the project, all while maintaining a deep connection to traditional sources.
The journey opens with the song “Ve’al Kulam“, which conveys a simple, pure, and direct message: “Eloka Selichot, Selach Lanu, Mechal Lanu, Kaper lanu-Hashem of forgiveness, forgive us, pardon us, atone for us.” No superfluous words or complexity—just a single request rising from the depths of the heart.
In the song “A Naye Yar” (A New Year), Daitsch presents a personal and touching dialogue with Hashem. On one side of the scales lie one’s commandments and deeds—both good and bad—while on the other stand the hardships, trials, and tragedies one has endured. From this reckoning emerges a simple, sincere plea in the chorus: “Master of the Universe, after all is said and done, I ask You for a good and blessed year.”
From there, the album moves to “Mi Yichyeh” (“Who Shall Live”), which gives musical expression to the chilling words of the Unetaneh Tokef prayer. The song opens with a dramatic atmosphere reflecting the pain and anxiety inherent in the lyrics, then gradually shifts character as it reaches the declaration—”U’Teshuva U’Tefilla U’Tzeddaka Maavirin Et Ro’a Hagezeira”—the moment when fear gives way to comfort and hope.
The song “Ashrei Ayin” (“Fortunate is the Eye”) bridges the past, present, and future. By weaving together quotations from various sources, it captures the immense joy that once filled the Beit Hamikdash, the Simchat Beit HaSho’evah (Water-Drawing Celebration) observed to this day, and the profound hope of returning to celebrate in the Beit Hamikdash once more, in the presence of the Shechina. The album concludes with “A Yom Tov Niggun”—an ancient melody sung in Chassidic courts for generations. For Deutsch, the song holds a personal memory from the Belz Chassidic court: that special moment at the conclusion of the holiday when the Rebbe returns home, accompanied by Chassidim singing with immense fervor. Beneath the joy lies a profound plea that all the prayers offered during the holiday be accepted with favor.
“This is the month of Tishrei as I experience it,” shares Leiby Deutsch. “I wanted to capture in this album all the emotions that accompany me throughout this month—from the awe of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and the prayer for a good year, to the immense joy of the festivals. It was important to me that the melodies truly reflect the lyrics and that, together with young talent, we could breathe new life into the music. This is my personal journey, yet I believe it resonates with every Jew. Let us share in the emotion and celebrate together.”
